Finding the right lactation consultant can feel overwhelming, especially in those early postpartum days when everything already feels like a lot. The good news is that there are so many incredible providers in New Jersey.
Here are a few things to keep in mind as you decide what’s best for your family:
Look for an IBCLC
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) has the highest level of training in breastfeeding and infant feeding support.
Consider in-home vs. office visits
Many families find in-home support especially helpful in the early days, when leaving the house can feel daunting. Others may prefer a clinical setting or ongoing support groups.
Think about your specific needs
Some providers specialize in areas like tongue ties, bottle refusal, or transitioning back to work. If you’re facing a specific challenge, it can be helpful to choose someone with that expertise.
Check insurance coverage
Some lactation consultants are in-network or can provide superbills for reimbursement, which can make support more accessible.
Trust the fit
Beyond credentials, feeling comfortable and supported matters. The right consultant will meet you with empathy, encouragement, and zero judgment.
Those first few weeks with a new baby are a blur of feeding, healing, and getting to know each other. Having the right support, whether that’s a lactation consultant, a postpartum group, or someone to tell you that you’re doing a great job, can make all the difference.
