What to Wear For Summer Family Photos

I can’t believe summer is just around the corner! Winter always lingers, spring passes too quickly, and before you know it we’re stepping into golden evenings and warm, barefoot days (my daughter loves being barefoot whenever I allow it!) As a photographer, I’m always thinking a season ahead, helping clients plan the details that make their sessions feel effortless-starting with what to wear for summer family photos.

Summer offers so many beautiful possibilities, and your outfit choices should reflect the feel of your session. Are you dreaming of a carefree beach location where you can play and laugh with your little ones? Or something a bit more refined, like a romantic garden backdrop? Whatever your vision, thoughtful styling brings it to life.

Some of my favorite color palettes for summer include earthy neutrals like sand and ivory, soft pastels such as rose and powder blue, and coastal tones like sea foam and white. Below, I’ve put together outfit ideas that will help you look and feel your best for timeless summer family portraits.

What to Wear For Summer Family Photos

For Moms: flowy, feminine, effortless

Moms should always plan for their outfits to set the tone for the session. I always advise clients to choose mom’s outfit first and then family members outfits around it. For summer, I recommend starting with something soft, light, and flowy. Complement with light makeup, and natural hair to give that effortless summer look. Avoid shorts, mini dresses, and heavy fabrics.

–Maxi dresses in breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or bamboo.
-Subtle floral prints with small details like eyelets, or smocking
-I love barefoot or a simple sandal
–Neutral linen pants with a fitted top

For Dad: classic, clean, comfort

-Linen or cotton button-down shirt
-Crisp white t-shirt
-Light chinos
Avoid bright sneakers and logos.

For Babies/Kids: polished yet playful and simple

–Floral outfits for girls, this one too!
–Rompers are great so the kids can run around a little more
-Plain linen or cotton shirts for boys
Avoid logos as they can make photos appear dated.
